Anybody using an Alta Router?

Hello, wondering if anyone has tested or is using Alta Route10 Router?

I’ve ordered one, waiting for delivery.

It’s a interesting proposition:

Four 2.5 Gbps RJ45 Ports

Two Hardware-Accelerated 10 Gbps SFP+ Ports

PoE+ x2 ports

Quad-Core Qualcomm Network Accelerator

This is £192, inc 2 PoE+ and 2 SFP, nothing Ubiquiti has comes close.

Its early launch of the product Not a feature for feature swapout for my UCG-Ultra.

new features coming in future firmware releases.

homelab needs some a toy.
Really interested to see how this performs. think it’s OpenWrt based.
https://www.alta.inc/route10

free cloud hosted controller, App via bluetooth and they have a hardware controller to purchase, think Cloudkey.

Self host controller needs a one off purchase licence key.

If anyone has one or has tested, be interested on how you got on, pros and cons.

thanks

thanks

That’s actually so funny as I tested it for them (Alta)!

I was lucky to beta test the Route10 and I did love it tbh. I have switched back to my UDM SE mainly because dual wan and better routing wasn’t really a thing when the beta dev version was out.

But the router is a good bit of kit!

It’s Debian under the hood I think so I had to do a lot of the testing with CLI. The web console needs more features before I’ll bring in back into play. The lack of web gui is annoying mind you.

For reference I got sent the Route10 and Local hardware controller for free and haven’t been told to say anything good or bad about it

Brill. :+1:t4:

From what I gather, Software features are being rolled out. IPS/IDS, wireguard, Wan failover etc. These will come on stream at some point. Having said that willing to take a punt and test. It’s homelab  afterall. The hardware is why I am interested.

2 PoE ports take care of access points, a DAC SFP cable to hookup to main switch. Cat 6 to Av switch.

Going to use cloud controller to start with.

Web interfaces are the best. But seems like cloud and Apps is where many new networking startups seem to go.

Having said that had a Firewalla Gold plus, that was a good albeit App Managed.

will let you know how i get on.

Thanks

You will love the hardware! The software is just what needs working on tbh.

Just setup the controller on a Raspberry Pi, thats one thing sorted… Now the nail biting wait for Royal Mail …

That sounds very interesting. Can you let us know how you get on?
Did you order the router directly from the US?

They have a distributer in UK now. …

Ah with LinITX I tend to use the DPD service but that’s cuz Royal Mail suck near me

Thank you for the info. That is great news. Having a distributer here in the UK eliminates the US VAT/Export costs.

It does sound silly, but I might end up swapping my ubiquity gear for alta labs kit, As Hardware wisethey seem to be quite a bit more capable.

I mean, I literally just got the U7 pro so this will be my next upgrade when my Wi-Fi eight comes out or whatever

For the route10 I would wait a bit until all the features mentioned are actually live. I use the AP6 Pro but want them to bring 2.5GB Ethernet to the AP

They are getting positive review for the Wifi 6 APs. The PoE switches look good but 1Gb.

Route 10 has been out a few months but The specs alone have made me want to take a look.

As @WhyAydan says there are features missing , “coming soon” which will cause issue in a production stack. Home lab to play around, with not an issue.

If Alta can get the features rolled out and the hardware in the wild lives up to the billing. Think this may be a winner for Multi-Gig internet connections. Its a thought out design 2AP 2.5Gb , SFP to switches Wan 2.5Gb ether or SFP. Ticks al the boxes. Just a matter of waiting for the software to evolve. :crossed_fingers:

Oh yeah, I’ve got no intention of swapping, i’ve spent far too much money on UniFi gear! Plus, I like the UniFi gear, If Wi-Fi eight ever comes out, it may be my next upgrade though

It doesn’t really make a lot of sense to have Wi-Fi 6E with just a gigabyte port, It needs to be 2.5 G at least

Right have it setup.

Was a real pain migrating over my network and static IP devices. The Route 10 is a work in progress, the DHCP server and GUI need some work, were I had most issues with converting DHCP assigned IP to STATIC. The firewall is basic but functional. So I look at this at a new Startup product so will be rough around the edges.

My take on it is HOMELAB(Wireguard/Openvpn,) I would say YES, with caveats at present no PBR VPN, country blocking, IPD/IDS, howver if you tinker  intresting product

For home users with a flat LAN - maybe fine, for Advance users or those runing servers , need remote acesss— NO too bleeding edge.

Considering it’s only been out a month, will be a several more firmware releases to get key features implement. I setup the route 10 using the cloudcontroiller - will be moving to a self hosted contoller on , Raspberry Pi. Was a time consuning and fustrating migration…now its running, works well with some niggles,I am willing to live with these

On the Yayzi 900/900 service was using a UCG-ULtra as the router, nothing fancy, a VPN CLINET running, some firewall rules, local DNS piholes and 5 Vlans.

My main issue was the poor inter-vlan speeds. Crossing VLANS say Phone to Camera or IoT VLANS there was a LAG. The route 10 is blistering fast, I am getting almost the same response as being on the VLAN its self. Qualitative … need to do some proper testing. but based on speed things load, noticfiations arrive at the time of an event not 10 seconds after.

Have its setup with WAN Port 1, Port 2 and 3 Poe to 2x U6 Access Points SFP 1 to USW-24-PoE switch.

After almost giving up last night with the migration, I am this moringn looking at it as a triumph. The basic rulles Firewall pass GRC shields up - albeit had I had to change ICMP Ping IPv4 from Accept to Drop. Going to move over some firewall rules over teh week and see. DNS is being served by the Pihole the perfectly on all networks. Firewall UI is basic so manual but I am willing to give it a go.

Another observation - its cool runnings - 40C-45C thats with one SFP DAC and 2 PoE+ running. Be intresting to see as more features are added how it performs.

Speedtest WIRED: directly on the Router.

Glad to see you got it setup!

Yeah like I said the hardware is so nice! The software is lacking massively, it’s functional but feature rich it is not. I know they have a lot upcoming so until they action upon these it’s not in use.

The Routing is something I need and simply without it (yes I can do it via cli) I won’t have it as my main router.

Home/Work setup here, so not a big issue putting it into my network stack.

The performace is just silly (good):

Connect on WIFI to AP - NO VPN running;

Here is a Proton VPN connection- Wireless client:

Silly good or bad lol

Thankfully its GOOD :sunglasses:

You using Alta APs?

No, have Ubquiti U6 pro and a U6 Mesh. Will be stciking with these, all working fine.

Linitx have a good launch offer:
Alta Labs NFR Pack - Route10, S8-POE, AP6 + AP6-PRO

£438 inc.vat - thats a good deal in my book.
