Comparing Steam downloads

I am still having issues with stream and downloads.

I can download a game from Battle.net at 190-200MB/s no issues but steam is just all over the place.

Here is my profile:

Can some people please take a look at my games list and download some of the same games I have and show a screen shot of the following:

As you can see, The download can start fast, 1gbps but plumets. But never gets much past that, And not near 2gbps either.

A friend of mine on a 900mbps BT FTTP connection can download things faster than I can as his speed is rock solid full speed the whole time.

The idea of getting this 2Gbps connection was so i can download what I need quickly. Mainly large files like games from Steam ETC.

There certainly seems to be an issue here but as to what it is, I do not know.

I get the same if I download from London or Manchester.

Thanks!

PS. Back on my VM DOCSIS 1GIG I did not have this problem.

The issue extends to downloads in Chrome as well but oddly not speedtests

First off, what kind of storage are you on?, Are you on the NVME or? SATA 3 SSDs?

I find the download speeds on Steam a little bit inconsistent as well however it depends on how the game is compressed or if it’s even compressed at all

I recently downloaded red dead redemption two on the rockstar launcher and it downloaded at a full 245 MB per second all the way through the download however if I download GTA4 on Steam for example it will maybe cap out at 1.2 GB/s

I would suggest opening up task manager and looking to see if CPU is maxed out. Like @L0rdVerga says when it’s compressing then you won’t get no where near your max speeds unless you have a top end pc.

First off… I said things were all fine back on VM so it cant be my hardware… but here it is anyway

Ryzen 7 9700X
32 GB DDR5 6400MT/S
1x WD 1TB NVME Gen4 SSD
1x Crucial 1TB NVME Gen3 SSD
RTX 4070Ti 12GB

Downloading Black Desert

Downloading THE FINALS

I will add some other games from epic and battle net once ive had dinner…

Ok, Windows update broke my windows install so I have done a clean install of Windows 11… Anyway.

This is download via EA

Same game via Steam

Much better result there. I wonder if its downloading from EA servers vs Steam?

Another EA game via Steam give a good download speed

So it seems a side effect of the Windows re-install is a better download speed from Steam. How odd.

I wonder what was causing the slow down before? I have mostly installed all my programs again bar a few tid bits.

I will have to keep an eye on things and see if a program causes a change in speeds.

Steam games are kept solely on steam servers, so I think it’s just differences in game encryption and compression type, imo

It’s windows!

They love a good broken update

Don’t get me started lol

After the latest update installed, explorer.exe was crashing and opening over and over and over and over with no end in sight… I used system restore and all was ok again… I told WU to not install that update…

It did it anyway and back to explorer crashing over and over.

System restore failed me the 2nd time with no restore point listed!

Uninstalled the update… explorer still borked. Sod it wheres my USB stick! xD

It seems that Epic Games caps out at 200mb/s for some reason

Could be just Epic being Epic though

Epic is behaving a bit better today, but still maxing out at 1.1gbps
