Problem with EX820V router constantly dropping internet

Ever since our FTTP was installed, we’ve had connection issues. I’ve managed to get most solved, but have run out of ideas with this one. Our WiFi drops multiple times a day, particularly between 19.30 and 21.30, but other times too. Ethernet also drops too on occasion, but less often than the WiFi.

Yesterday, I was next to the router when it happened. The internet light (second from left) was red, but the lights on the ONT were all green.

The drops are usually only for a second at most, although they can come in clusters where it goes up and down multiple times for a minute or two.

I’ve been trying to fault find but the router’s system log only saves about 30 minutes of information, so it’s not much use if I am busy and can’t log in to save a copy immediately. There’s also no manual for it, and TP Link won’t help as it’s an ISP model.

Can you suggest anything to try to fix this? Does the router light going red when the ONT light is green suggest this is a faulty router? Can you release new firmware to enable full service logs, or at least 24 hours?

Thank you for looking into it. We had some more issues after I posted last night so managed to pull the router log while it still had some useful information.

For some reason, my external public IP is requesting a new lease from my external gateway IP every 30 seconds. This continues constantly, every 30 seconds, until for some reason the external IP receives no reply. When that happens, it stops sending a request and switches to broadcasting the request instead, and when that fails it starts sending DISCOVER instructions. When that doesn’t work, it declares the OFFER failed and the DHCP unavailable. It tries a DISCOVER again and fails again, until it finally gets a reply from the gateway IP and works again.

So, this looks to be something going wrong with the hardware or the IP setup external to my router, which is backed up by the ONT showing internet while the router showed a red light.

There might also be a secondary issue, as there are also multiple occurrences of a specific client MAC address being deleted and added repeatedly over a minute or two until it settles down. This seems unrelated to the internet drops, other than they happen just after the DNS server address has been received following one of the constant requests from the external IP.

Hi, do you have any update with what you found? Any idea why our IP is being renewed every 30 seconds or why mac addresses are being constantly deleted and added?

The short lease on the IP address is intentional but the lack of response sometimes causing you to lose your IP for a bit is not right.

What does the ultra short lease achieve? That short a lease feels like it’s going to massively increase the load on their DHCP servers, and make any network instability that would otherwise go unnoticed cause a drop of connection as the lease expires. I’m on a static IP too, so I don’t even understand why it’s a leased IP and not permanent.

I assume most customers don’t have static IPs and the low lease time is just because the lease time is the same across all types of IP. I think this probably would have to change in the future as Yayzi gets a lot more customers but for now I don’t think the infrastructure is going to be having issues.

Given you’re on a static IP, I don’t see any reason you can’t just specify that static configuration on your interface and have that work, you just wouldn’t get any updates if something like the gateway address changed. Having said that, I’ve never seen my lease fail to renew except in circumstances when I knew Yayzi or Cityfibre was changing something, so if you are regularly experiencing extended periods of time where you can’t get a lease renewed, I would expect you perhaps actually have an underlying problem on the connection and you’d be dropping traffic whether you were statically configured or had a short lease.

Does anyone have any idea about the constant mac address deleting/adding on WiFi? It’s still happening:

I also don’t understand why my router is logging these MAC Address events as MESH data, particularly when Mesh is turned off.

Is this actually causing you a problem? I would imagine it might just be using the word Mesh to refer to any connections to/from the WiFi rather than specifically using the mesh feature.

There’s very little information about this router out right now (not even a manual as far as I can see) - but this could just be some overly verbose logging and no real issue at all.

The use of Mesh as a term is probably not a problem in itself, but it does make looking for a solution almost impossible. As to whether it’s causing a problem, yes it is. When a MAC address is deleted, the IP is also lost and connection drops until the MAC is re-added when the IP is reassigned. In the screenshot above, BC:09 drops out 10 times in that 22 minute period. That’s my server box, so in those 22 minutes the film we were streaming buffered out 10 times, making it almost unwatchable.

Yeah sorry if my message was ambiguous, when I was asking if it caused a problem I meant were you seeing actual symptoms from these messages not the wording of them haha.

Unfortunately don’t think I can help much as I’m using my own equipment and don’t see this issue.

I can’t have my internet dropping during work, so if there’s no fix and it continues happening i’ll have to leave.

We’ve got this with the network team now, I’ll make sure this gets sorted for you. But we aren’t seeing any dropouts from other customers, which is what we’d expect if this was a network issue from our end.

Thank you for replying. I don’t think it’s a network issue as such, as the ONT lights don’t show any issue. I think it’s a hardware issue, with either a faulty router or a conflict between the router and your settings. Is there another version of the firmware I can try?

After a few weeks of great connection, it dropped out again this afternoon with the same DHCP lease issue whereby it couldn’t renew the lease in time so the lease expired and the internet dropped out completely. Could someone please take another look at this?
