The following timeline has been prepared based on all the information currently available to us. While every effort has been made to ensure its accuracy, unforeseen circumstances may lead to adjustments, which will be communicated promptly.
Today (Migration Completion and Initial Post-Migration Tasks)
- 18:00 - Migrations Completed:
- All planned network migrations are due to be completed by 18:00 today.
- Once migrations are finalised, the focus will immediately shift to stabilising and optimising the network’s core infrastructure.
- Post-18:00 - Reallocating Static IP Addresses:
- After migrations are complete, the next priority will be reallocating static IP addresses to customers.
- Important: Static IPs will only be allocated to those who have raised a request to [email protected].
- If no request has been raised, the team will not allocate the address, and you may risk losing your static IP.
Acknowledgment of Communication Error
We understand that we got it wrong when we communicated the 250 Mbps speeds. This expectation was based on past traffic trends, and we sincerely apologise for the confusion and frustration caused.
Our team is fully committed to restoring and enhancing the network speeds, and we greatly appreciate your patience as we work through these issues.
Core Network Capacity vs Customer Speeds
- Core Network Capacity:
- The core network capacity refers to the total amount of bandwidth the infrastructure can support across all users and services.
- Capacity determines how much traffic the network can handle, ensuring smooth operation even under high demand.
- Customer Speeds:
- Customer speeds represent the individual connection speeds experienced by users.
- These speeds depend on how capacity is allocated, real-time traffic levels, and network optimisation measures.
Capacity Expansion and Speed Management
- Cable Completion Status:
- The necessary cables to expand core network capacity have been installed and handed over.
- Once activated, these cables will more than double the core network capacity, allowing for a higher volume of traffic to be handled efficiently.
- This expanded capacity creates the foundation for delivering significantly higher customer speeds over time.
- Planned Integration Timeline:
- The final step of integrating the new cables into the CityFibre network is now scheduled for Friday.
- While this was initially anticipated for today, scheduling adjustments have been made to ensure the process is seamless and fully prepared.
- Until integration is complete, the network will continue to operate within current capacity limits.
Traffic Management Between Now and Friday
- Hourly Network Monitoring:
- The team will conduct hourly traffic assessments to ensure the current capacity is optimally utilised.
- Customer speeds will be dynamically adjusted in real-time, increasing or decreasing based on traffic demands to maintain stability.
- Bandwidth Considerations:
- Traffic analysis shows that over 50% of usage during some periods is directed to speed test servers.
- While speed testing is completely understandable, it places a significant load on the core network during this time of temporarily limited capacity.
- Customers are kindly encouraged to limit speed testing where possible, as this will assist in managing bandwidth efficiently and could help increase speeds more quickly.
Friday (CityFibre Cable Integration)
- All-Day - Cable Integration:
- On Friday, the final integration of the new cables into the CityFibre network will take place.
- This will activate the expanded core network capacity, unlocking the potential for exponential speed increases for customers.
- Following this, further work will focus on gradually optimising customer speeds to take full advantage of the improved capacity.
After-Action Report
After all work has been completed and speeds are fully restored, we will publish a comprehensive After-Action Report.
This report will outline:
- What actions we took.
- What went wrong.
- What we’ve learned to ensure better communication and performance in the future.
We are committed to transparency and continuous improvement and appreciate your understanding as we resolve these issues.
TL;DR
- Migrations will finish at 18:00 today.
- Static IPs will only be reallocated if you’ve emailed [email protected]. If you haven’t raised a request, you may lose your static IP.
- Core network capacity (total bandwidth) will more than double once new cables are integrated on Friday, allowing for significant speed improvements.
- Customer speeds are currently being managed dynamically based on traffic levels.
- We acknowledge we got it wrong with the 250 Mbps speeds communication and sincerely apologise.
- Please limit speed testing where possible as it consumes valuable bandwidth during this time of reduced capacity.
- Once all work is complete, we’ll share a detailed After-Action Report explaining what we did, what went wrong, and what we’ve learned.
Additional notes: IPv6 will still be worked on, but priority has shifted to ensure speeds are back to where they should be.
