Oh go on then, It’s 2025. Surely CF have made SOME progress on the XGS-PON upgrade!?
Nothing yet. Trust me once we hear something we’ll let everyone know
Looking on the CF availability lookup, one of the other providers tells me I can get a symmetric 2Gig connection - does this not indicate XGS-PON?
have a feeling this is going to pushed back into the long grass, until CF have payback on there investment on GPON. all comes down to ££££, Can’t see CF rushing to swap out kit and replacing ONT’s which is less than 5 years old.
We’ve had CF installed in our area about 3 years ago, most people around are <500MB package - many of my neighbours just swapped from old VDSL to a 100MB FTTP.
Probably the new build of CF networks will be XGS-PON and then somepoint in the future an upgrade of older GPON kit.
Breath hold do not!
I have notice that too they offering 2gbps down and upload but on a 2.5gbps package
No they’re advertising it incorrectly
I would love it if XGS-PON was 1.2/1.2 on the 1.2g Pro package
Not that I need the extra upload speed
Now I’m getting really confused. I’ve been told this today:
So… if this other provider is saying that their postcode checker is saying I can get 2Gbps symmetrical, then why am I not able to get the 2.3Gig Pro package with Yayzi? Or is 2Gbps symmetrical entirely possible in GPON areas but Yayzi don’t offer such a package? Or, is there something else I’m missing?
Cityfibre GPON: Download 2.5G/ Upload 1.2G
Asymmetric
Probably they have not understood GPON or theres an error in their checker.
Cityfibre offer :
GPON
1.2G/1G
2G/1G
XGS-PON
1.2G/1.2G
2.5G/2.5G
GPON can not do 2gig up and down
You can’t upgrade to 2.3 Gig pro if you are current on GPON as CityFibre do not have an upgrade path to upgrade people from GPON to XGS yet.
So far you’re both telling me everything I already know. However…
- Yayzi are telling me that my area is not XGS-PON yet
- [Other provider]'s lookup is saying I can get 2Gbps symmetric - which implies XGS-PON as requirement, would you not agree?
One of these statements is untrue. Which one?
Has [Other provider] always said you can get 2Gbps symmetric?
i.e. Has their system not understood the nuance?
Equally, has the responder to your above question understood the nuance; nowhere does anyone mention the direction in which 1 or 2 Gbps is possible.
The other provider, have they confirmed to you thier service is provided over XGS-PON in your area/address?
The email is not clear on what they are offiering, 2GB Service - Mean nothing without with technology they will provide the service over.
Thats an answer I’m waiting on. But as you’ve listed above, 2Gbps symmetric is not available on GPON, unless they’ve found a way to do so.
I should add, they don’t provide an asymmetric 2G/1G service, so there’s no misunderstanding on exactly what their service is providing. But I’m struggling with the fact that their 2Gb symmetric can only (apparently) be achieved in a XGS-PON area, which I’m led to believe (from Yayzi) that I’m not in. So why would their lookup (connected to CF) be telling me I can get a service that I can’t? And they’ve assured me it must be correct? Something doesn’t add up here on one side or the other.
I think it an error on the providers search.
Are any other Multi-gig providers from the CF search showing up with 2.5/2.5?
Not possible on GPON. So this provider is either chatting or simply uninformed.
Either way if you are in XGS area and you already have a GPON installed you can’t get upgraded to XGS until CityFibre make the upgrade path.
They’re not showing the correct information. We’re pulling the information live from CityFibre but we separate the GPON and XGS-PON packages, as to ensure we comply with ASA.
Other providers are combining them.
Package availability results from Vodafone for my address:
Again, this should not be possible if I’m in a GPON area, would you agree to that fact?
UPDATE: just got this reply from [other provider] which is now meaning things make more sense:
This is starting to go a little over my head reading from WDM-PON vs GPON vs XG-PON | FS Community, but it does seem to indicate that it’s not a clear cut as being either in a purely GPON or XGS-PON area - there is an in-between that allows for faster (and symmetrical) speeds. And what Yayzi doesn’t do yet is cater for this.
Yayzi don’t have to cater for it. They don’t care about the tech on the line between CityFibre and You. All they tell CityFibre is the max speed they can do. Which is the max that CityFibre can do 2.3/2.3. So I’m really not sure why other providers are saying false info. They should be polling the exact same API endpoint.
Two providers (one of which being a major player) saying they can do better uploads than 1Gbps on my apparently 1Gbps limited line is false info?
